Tooth Decay

Closeup young woman with toothacheDid you know that our teeth are the only part of our body that can’t regenerate itself? That’s why it’s so important to take care of them.

While tooth decay is somewhat normal, it’s entirely preventable. At Melody Dental Care, we look forward to helping you overcome tooth decay to put your best smile forward.

What is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth enamel, which is the hard, outer layer of your teeth. It’s caused by bacteria in your mouth that produce acids that eat away at your enamel. Tooth decay can lead to cavities (holes in your teeth) and other problems, so it’s important to keep your teeth healthy and brush and floss regularly.

The first step in preventing tooth decay is to understand the symptoms and signs. If you notice any of the following, be sure to contact your dentist:
  • Toothache or pain when eating or drinking
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks
  • Visible holes or pits in the teeth
  • Dark spots on the teeth
  • Rough or jagged edges on the teeth

Treatment for Tooth Decay

Thankfully, there are treatment options for tooth decay to help preserve your oral health.

When the decay is minor, we may be able to monitor it while encouraging you to continue proper oral hygiene habits, like brushing and flossing regularly.

If decay has started to penetrate the enamel, it may be time for a filling so we can stop the decay from spreading to further parts of the tooth.

When decay spreads into the dentin and pulp, a root canal may be necessary. At your appointment, we’ll let you know which option is right for you so that you can make the best decision for your health.
