Man in dental chairGum disease is a serious problem that can lead to tooth loss, and it’s important to be aware of the symptoms so you can get treatment as soon as possible.

At Melody Dental Care, we’re proud to welcome patients of all ages and stages of life into our care, and look forward to educating you about gum disease and gingivitis so that you can have a healthy mouth for years to come.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. It is a common condition that can lead to more dental issues if not treated. Symptoms include red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is usually caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Plaque can be removed with good oral hygiene, but if it is not removed, it can harden and turn into tartar. Tartar can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Gingivitis can often be reversed with good oral hygiene. However, if it is not treated, it can lead to periodontitis, which is a more serious inflammation.

What is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tissues that support your teeth. It is a serious condition that can lead to tooth loss if not treated. Symptoms include red, swollen, and bleeding gums, as well as bad breath. Periodontitis is usually caused by plaque that has turned into tartar. Tartar can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Periodontitis can often be reversed with good oral hygiene and professional dental cleanings. However, if it is not treated, it can lead to tooth loss.

How Can I Prevent Gingivitis and Periodontitis?

The best way to prevent gingivitis and periodontitis is to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and using mouthwash. You should also see us regularly for professional cleanings and checkups.

If you have gingivitis or periodontitis, there are treatments available. If you’re dealing with mild gum disease, a deep cleaning may be recommended. For more advanced periodontitis, we’ll need to examine your mouth to make our recommendations for care. Rest assured, we’ll always do everything we can to save your teeth and restore your oral health.
